Understanding 3D Scanner Camera Configuration

Typically, 3D scanners are equipped with three cameras:


  1. Two stereo cameras

  2. One texture camera


The Role of Stereo Cameras


Stereo cameras are primarily responsible for light sensing in 3D scanning. Contrary to popular belief, high megapixel counts aren't necessary for these cameras. In fact, 1.3MP to 2MP is usually sufficient for most applications. Here's why:


  1. Frame rate matters more than pixel count: A higher frame rate allows for faster scanning, producing more captures per second.

  2. Balance between speed and detail: While higher pixel counts can provide more points per capture, they also require more processing power.

  3. Hardware limitations: Higher megapixel cameras often demand more robust PC configurations to handle the increased data load.


It's important to note that when we talk about stereo cameras, we're referring to the sensor. The lens is a separate component, which can sometimes lead to confusion in product listings.


Debunking Marketing Claims


Some sellers may advertise their products with inflated pixel counts. For instance, a 1.3MP sensor paired with a 5MP lens might be marketed as a "6.3MP camera". This is misleading and doesn't accurately represent the scanner's capabilities.


Stereo Camera Specifications and Performance


For a stereo camera to truly benefit from high pixel counts and achieve high scanning speeds:


  1. It needs both high pixel count and high frame rate (600 FPS or higher)

  2. It should be compatible with USB 3.0 for faster data transfer


However, it's crucial to understand that camera pixel count does not directly correlate with scanning accuracy.


Texture Camera: A Separate Function


The texture camera serves a different purpose than the stereo cameras. It's used for mapping textures onto the 3D model. Currently, the highest resolution texture cameras used in 3D scanners are around 5MP. These are typically used for scanning small objects like teeth or faces.


For larger objects (over 2 meters), high-resolution texture mapping becomes impractical due to limitations in scanning speed, 3D model generation time, and display capabilities.


Conclusion


When considering a 3D scanner purchase, don't be swayed by high megapixel counts alone. Instead, consider the scanner's overall performance, including scanning speed, accuracy, and suitability for your specific applications.
